DIY Decor: Paper Flower Wreath

This post is a quick tutorial on how to create a wreath base out of toilet paper rolls and simple paper flowers.

The hallways in our apartment complex may be windowless, but we are very aware of what season is upon us by simply walking past all our neighbors doors. Wreaths, flowers, holiday signage, what have you, the doors are always cleverly decorated. My toddler likes to stand and point at each one saying “ooo, pretty!” So, of course I had to make one for our door! And her reaction; “Oh wooow! I love it Mom!” <3

To make our autumn wreath, I crafted several dozen paper flowers and hot glued them onto a makeshift wreath base created with toilet paper rolls! Yes sure, you can get a wreath base for $1 at the dollar store. But with little miss having been toilet trained recently, she loves to breeze through that TP, so I had an abundance of rolls to work with.

DIY Decor: Sprinkle Themed Bathroom

How I transformed our small apartment bathroom into a bright candy sprinkle themed space to encourage potty training.

So long diapers, it’s potty time! Is your kid ready to be potty trained? When our tot started to show interest, I researched the 3-day method, hit up my FB mom group for insider tips, bought gallons of carpet cleaner, and prepped a candy reward system to distribute after pees & poos. Before all that went down, I revamped the bathroom to encourage her to come running to the potty all the live long day.

Create Your Own Art Themed Nursery

This post about how I transformed a

This post features several little projects I did to help transform a bedroom into an art gallery themed nursery.

Once upon a time, my husband and I were ready to move out of our small apartment into a shockingly rent affordable townhouse down the street in our fave neighborhood. There would be enough space to set-up an art studio in a spare bedroom that had the best natural light. A day after we signed the rental contract, we found out I was pregnant. The timing was universally perfect. Without hesitation, instead of planning out a dream in home art studio, I began envisioning a fun nursery. Continue reading “Create Your Own Art Themed Nursery”

DIY Wiggles Themed Birthday Cake and Balloon Wall

This post is about how I put together a small Wiggles themed party, and features quick photo editing tutorial.

Come on down to Wiggle Town, do the propeller, I can stand like a statue, wake up Lachy, it’s Emma’s yellow bow. These random lyrics have been stuck in my head for the past year as my kid regularly watches, sings, and dances along to the Wiggles.

The Wiggles are an Australian based children’s rock band that originated in 1991 with a few line-up changes over the years, and they are still going strong as one of the top children entertainment groups in the world.  I had heard of them in my pre-baby days, but I think the first time I heard one of their songs was on an episode of Arrested Development when Charlize “Mr F” Theron sang “Hot Potato” in a car ride with George Michael. Classic.

Since my little peanut has been a fan for nearly half her life, I decided to go “all out” with a Wiggles themed 2nd birthday party. Some factors went into planning this though. A) we don’t have space for a home party, and she doesn’t have a lot of friends her age yet anyway, and B) most official Wiggles decor and toys must be shipped from Australia, and unfortunately that is not in my budget. So I opted to make a fun pull apart cake adorned in Wiggles colors, and a colorful balloon backdrop to take pictures of her opening a gift and eating cake. For a Wiggles inspired gift, I made her a “Dressing Up in Style” dress-up trunk (click here to see how I did that.)

Here’s what I did along with some tips that can help springboard your own Wiggles themed party! Continue reading “DIY Wiggles Themed Birthday Cake and Balloon Wall”

How to Make a Dress-Up Trunk

This post shares how to DIY a fun dress up trunk that can inspire years of imaginative play!

Morning routines in our home consist of waking up, drinking milk, brushing teeth, and looking for the best set of heels to wear in my closet. Actually, that’s my toddler’s routine, and she’s been doing it since about age one. Not even two yet, this girl has mastered a runway strut! After regularly watching The Wiggles, she’s also a fan of their song “Dressing Up in Style” where they sing “dressing up is so much fun, you can dress like anyone, you can use any clothes you find!” So for her birthday this year, I crafted a dress-up trunk that should get her through the next decade of imaginative costuming.

Dressing up let’s a kid live out their imagination by creating a costume to go along with a story they’ve created. I also love the art appeal of a dress-up trunk as it can be a catalyst for performance art, where the artist uses them-self in a live performance instead of traditional art mediums like painting or sculpture. Example, I’ve witnessed my kid put on a cool hat and flower lei, then proceed to play her toy piano with her feet and quietly scream with her eyes closed.  It was an amazing moment.

How to Create Your Own Cake Smash Photoshoot

This post features tips on how I DIY’ed my own cake smash photoshoot.

Your baby is about to become a one-year-old toddler. Commence crying, freaking out, or rejoicing that you’ve nailed down year one of parenthood. In that year, you’ve captured their first moments from their first day at home, their first steps, and even their first lemon slice.  Now it’s time to capture their first taste of birthday cake! (i.e. the cake smash)

You most likely caught those other moments on a whim with your smart phone (because, let’s be real, you take at least 100 pics a day of them with that thing.) To capture this particular moment, you can do a full on production, be your own creative director, even build a set in a make-shift home studio. And you can do it all for less than $20, saving you hundreds compared to what professionals can charge. Continue reading “How to Create Your Own Cake Smash Photoshoot”

How to Put Together a Time Capsule Gift

How I put together a time capsule for my kid to open on their 18th birthday.

“Treasure the time you have with your baby. Before you know it, they’ll be walking out the door to start life on their own.” If I had a dollar for every time that parenting tip was brought up to me, I wouldn’t have to live a DIY/frugal life. Just kidding, I still would, because creating art is the best!  Yes, it’s true, time does totally fly by.  The world as we know it changes, and babies grow up.

So capture time. Trap it in a box. Duct tape it up, and hide it away. Pop artist Andy Warhol did this on a regular basis. Continue reading “How to Put Together a Time Capsule Gift”

A fun recipe for pink cookies inspired by the artwork of Yayoi Kusama.

Recently, I took advantage of the kid’s nap time to attempt cleaning up my computer while luxuriating with a plate of cookies. Organizing all of my photo folders from the past year, I of course got sucked into the rabbit hole of staring at baby pictures . Whilst recalling all the memories of her learning how to sit, crawl, and eat, I came upon a folder of pictures from our first trip to a museum exhibit.

How to Do Your Own Maternity Photo Shoot

This post is how I planned, prepared, and completed my maternity photo shoot with the help of friends.

One of the funnest days during my pregnancy was getting some of my girlfriends together, hitting up a giant street art mural for a maternity photo shoot,  and going out to lunch after to eat all the things.  It was a day full of inside jokes, swollen ankles, and was strategically planned in advance.

At the time, I suffered from severe “pregnancy brain” and had utilized to-do lists on a near daily basis throughout my 2nd and 3rd trimester.  What a great, and totally legit excuse; I used it often. Continue reading “How to Do Your Own Maternity Photo Shoot”
