Edible Art: Frida Khalo Inspired Fruit Salad

Over the past month, my kid has been all about watching the animated movie Coco. Seriously, first thing in the morning, after naptime, and before bed, the requests are non-stop until I hit the play button on the remote. I love that it has inspired her to pick up her little 1 string guitar (once upon a time it had 6) and dance around the apartment strumming to whatever words she feels like singing.

Another cool thing about this movie is how much artist Frida Kahlo is featured! Like when Hector tries to impersonate her so he can cross the bridge, and when Miguel meets her in her studio chock full of imagery she was known for along with her pet monkey.  There, she previews a rehearsal for him with a papaya resembling birth, and mothers milk made by tears from a cactus that looks like her, to which she asks Miguel “Is it too obvious?”

That’s a great inside perspective for viewers who are familiar with Frida Kahlo. Famous for her self-portraits full of metaphoric imagery, she was inspired by Mexican folk culture, and was heavily invested in politics in Mexico. The political metaphors were also present in her still life paintings that came about later in her career.

Frida Kahlo “The Bride Who Gets Frightened of Seeing the Open Life.”

In the still life pictured above, “The Bride Who Gets Frightened of Seeing the Open Life,”  it’s not just a table with fruit on it. There is deeper symbolism, as there is in all of Frida’s work. Some viewers see humor in the doll, sex and fertility within the fruit and how they are opened, and others feel this painting is based on the relationship Frida had with painter Jacqueline Lamba. Lamba had shared with Frida how traumatic her wedding night (with poet André Breton) had been, thus the name of the painting.

I tried to recreate this painting with actual fruit that I had on hand…

So with all this cut up fruit, I decided to make a Frida fruit salad!

To make the Frida fruit salad, I used a selection of obvious fruits featured in the painting: watermelon, papaya, pineapple, and bananas. I threw in a mango as well because that’s what I interpreted the fruit next to the bird to be.

I cut up all the fruit into easy bite sizes that my toddler could eat as well, and stirred in dashes of cinnamon to taste. That really brought out the bright mango flavor, and paired incredibly with the watermelon!

There are a couple coconuts in that painting too, but I didn’t have the time to crack one open and cut the meat out before the toddler’s nap was over. (That’s when I do a majority of the blog photoshoots… naptime.)  Otherwise I would have topped this bowl with some shredded coconut. If I had a bag of sweetened coconut shreds, I would have toasted those up and thrown them on top of this salad for sure.

Another fun topping- chili powder! A little heat with the sweet makes a fun treat.

The day after I made the fruit salad, I took the leftovers (about 3-4 cups of fruit) and blended them all together in a blender with a few more dashes of cinnamon. Frida Kahlo fruit juice! The kid liked it too. And wanted more. Whoops, time to recreate another painting!

Yields1 Serving

 4 cups watermelon (about half of a small watermelon)
 1 papaya
 1 mango
 1 pineapple (or baby pineapple)
 2 bananas
 ¾ tbsp cinnamon
Optional
 toasted coconut (for topping)
 chili powder (for topping)

Cut the watermelon, papaya, mango, pineapple, and bananas into bite size pieces. Combine them all in a large bowl.

Toss with the cinnamon until evenly distributed.

Serve with optional toasted coconut flakes and chili powder.
